Dr Kartik Rajaratnam

Dr. Kartik Rajaratnam M.B.B.S

Kartik. A. Rajaratnam comes from a dedicated family of doctors who have served in Salem for 3 generations. His aspirations were either to become a formula-1 race driver or an army man but destiny made him a doctor in order to continue the dedicated service as a family physician.

After his graduation in 2004, he pursued a rather unconventional path by providing service in the field of HIV/AIDS care and support. This made him realise that being a Medical practitioner was an eternal calling and transformed to be an earnest and committed doctor to many who literally lost hope in life.

In December of 2010, He lost his father to interstitial lung disease after a long battle. His father was vocal and wanted to spend his last few days at home with his entire family around him. They fulfilled his dad's last wish despite resistance and backlash from many who knew them. From this experience, he learnt that the most important criterion for palliative care is patient autonomy and became aware that, in fact, he had provided palliative and end of life care to his dad during those last few days.

Everything seemed to fall in place as Kartik realized that he was an intuitive palliative care Physician. Got trained at KIDWAI Institute, Bangalore and started providing services as a Palliative care physician in Salem.

Today, in Shanti Nursing Home, Salem, he caters to general patients, HIV care and Palliative care extending to geriatric care and not restricting service to cancer Palliative care alone. He feels very happy to hold hands with his childhood friend Manjunathan for Vizhudhugall'87 and deems it as a happy coincidence.
